Snowshoeing in the Dolomites

The Dolomites are home to one of the world’s largest and attractive downhill ski areas. Yet the presence of the skier has no affect over the snowshoer here. Plenty of waymarked tracks lead through woodland and across snowfields, taking us high close to the rocky massifs themselves, spoiling us with some beautiful scenery at every turn. As we snowshoe, we shall see the Dolomites loom large over us, with their rose pink colour against the blue sky and brilliant white snow.

Our base, Canazei in the Val di Fassa is the ideal base for snowshoeing and offers us excellent access to wonderful routes. Many of the alpine villages we see here will have retained their traditional farm buildings giving us a picturesque ‘toy-town’ feel. We shall be staying at our favourite Hotel Fiordaliso where the amenities are excellent, the owner Maria gives us a warm welcome each time.

The snowshoeing will be totally invigorating. The fun, exhilaration and feeling of adventure is enormous, and there is great satisfaction about being surrounded in good company under blue skies when we venture across unbroken snow. Refugios are in abundance offering warm drinks and cosy comfort along the way.
